Prince Albert`s Cairn
This amazing pyramid was built in memory of Prince Albert, at the request of Queen Victoria ,after his untimely death.Sited near Balmoral Castle it is the largest dry stone feature in Scotland and a great tribute not only to his memory but also to the craftsmen who fashioned the rocks out of granite .

I have been enjoying your site over the past few months. Some really interesting pics. This cairn is amazing. I had no idea it existed. Who built it, when was it built and how long did it take to complete? Any additional info would be welcome.

The cairn was erected by Queen Victoria (as we say)to the beloved memory of Albert the great and good Prince Consort.He died of Typhoid at Windsor in December 1861The date on the stone is given as 12th August 1862 so the edifice must have been completed within a year.There are initials of their children carved on some stones along the base.
